Roman Society
Slave labor replaced paid labor. Many farmers and workers went into cities looking for employment. Upper class Romans lived with danger of revolts. Many upper class woman study at home and often came as well educated as men. People in lower classes have at least the basic knowledge of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Wealthy boys and girls got private lessons at home and the men went to academies. The households included all unmarried children, married sons, and their families, all dependent relatives, and household slaves. The father was the absolute head of the household. Wives had few legal rights but had more freedom than Geek woman. In the Roman Society the men were the masters of the house, and kind of took over everything. The rich men had roles but it was very different from the poor men in Rome. The rich men before leaving put on their togas and eat bread, and after they had done that, they began their work which included, writing letters, possibly seeing clients, and meet other businessmen. I got my information from my World History book (Mounir A. Farah, Andrea Berens Karls , 1999) (Pg 159)
